Performance Reports

Who it is for

The performance lead and the coach who write the report by hand today, and the boat owner who reads it. The job is a document rather than a session: computed on the server, paged, and reproducible from a yardstick that is stated on the page rather than assumed.

The day, as a document

One sailing day, with the boat’s speed and wind-angle deltas and its VMG percentage plotted against true wind speed, per mode, and the small multiples behind each figure. The same day groups by race leg, by tack or by sail.

The reference the numbers are measured against

A report carries the reference layers it was computed from: the target curve out of the boat’s polar and its tuning table, the season’s own trend, and the fastest and slowest VMG bands that turn a scatter into a setup observation. Every layer prints its own n, and below the gate a layer is served with the reason it is missing rather than drawn thin.

Manoeuvres

Every sailing day also has a report of its tacks and one of its gybes. The day’s best three are aligned on one instant and drawn on shared time strips: progress to windward, boat speed against target, wind angle, heel, rotation rate and rudder. Beside them, the path over the ground coloured by speed against target, every manoeuvre of the day ranked by the metres it cost, and the shape a manoeuvre makes by wind band. The reference is the boat’s own twentieth percentile in that wind speed. It is drawn once twelve manoeuvres across three wind bands exist, and stated as missing before that.

The start

Every race with a gun has a start report. This start against the day’s others: speed and progress at the gun, distance from the line, the time to cross, and the time to reach ninety-five per cent of target. The last three minutes over the ground, with the line drawn. A second-by-second table from 1:20 before the gun: distance behind the line, wind angle against target, speed, progress, wind direction, the recorded burn and the rudder. What the tablet recorded is printed as recorded, and a second it had no answer for prints none.

Race legs

The same race leg by leg: how long each leg took, the wind it was sailed in, speed and angle against target, progress to windward and the manoeuvres it held. Legs come from the fleet-tracking provider for the race. Without provider data the race is one leg, and the report says so.

Print and PDF

Print opens the report as a printable document: light ground, A4 landscape, at most six panels a page, with the boat, the date, the report and the page number on every sheet. Export as PDF renders the same document on the server and hands back a download link. The file is keyed on what the report is made of, so a second export of an unchanged report returns the file that exists, and a new calibration entry, polar or import produces a new one. The last sheet carries the yardstick: which polar, uploaded when, the calibration entries and upwash rows in force, the version of the computation, a fingerprint of the telemetry, and the limits that applied.

What it does not do

A report is a document: it carries no scrubber and no hover tooltip — the debrief player is the instrument. A small sample is gated rather than smoothed. The platform does not compute the tablet’s own pre-start burn model. And the caveat is the same one the product already prints under a performance trend, in the same words: a trend, not a verdict. Sea state, crew, rig tune, what else was up at the time and a team getting better at using a sail are not modelled.
